Principal Coaching
Each principal will participate in the following coaching support:
CEI’s Turnaround Principal Leadership Institute provides 30 hours of professional development over five days. Each day of professional learning includes two three-hour sessions for a total of six hours per day. The institute is grounded in core leadership topics including: 1) data-driven decision-making to improve instructional practice and improve student achievement outcomes, with a lens for equity and inclusion 2) effective team building and examining capacity within turnaround school, 3) rigorous instruction for student outcomes, 4) teacher practice, and 5) developing a sustainable mission and vision for turnaround schools.
Structured monthly small group/cohort coaching that engages principals in professional development that builds on content covered in the Turnaround Principal Leadership Institute (see attachment). Principals will be organized into three cohorts and led by a dedicated Leadership Coach along with a district leader or Principal mentor. Content will be tailored to whether the principal’s school needs. Cohorts will meet for four hours per month across the 10-month academic schedule and continue work in the five core leadership topics started in the Turnaround Principal Leadership Institute.
One-on-one coaching sessions to address the specific needs of the schools that principals are leading. CEI will use the needs assessment to guide the direction of coaching sessions, as well as work with districts to identify the appropriate structures of meetings. CEI proposes to conduct two-hour coaching sessions twice a month for the duration of the 10-month academic schedule. In total, principals will receive 40 hours of 1:1 coaching each year. Specific foci for coaching with turnaround principals has included topics that are critical to whole school transformation, such as: Creating Shared Vision, Mission and Core Values; Creating a Data Culture; Using the Danielson Framework to Improve Teacher Practice; Developing Leadership Capacity (Teacher and Administrator); Building a Strong Literacy Culture; Developing a Strong STEAM Culture; Education with an Equity Lens; Effective and Efficient Communication and Decision-Making; Recruiting, Developing and Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers; Refining Instructional Foci/Priority Areas; Creating Standards Based, Rigorous Instruction Using DoK; SEL and Restorative Practices: Building an Inclusive and Supportive School Culture; Team Building for a Collaborative Culture; Creating Authentic PLCs; Trauma-Sensitive/Trauma-Informed Praxis; and, Resource Development and Alignment with Instructional Priorities.
Synchronous/Asynchronous professional development on core leadership topics will support the continued learning from CEI’s Turnaround Principal Leadership Institute and the structured bi-monthly cohort coaching. Topics will be matched to the specific needs of each school and may include, but are not limited to:
● Use of Data (based on the work of Anthony Bryk and the PDSA cycle)
● Conducting Instructional Rounds (Norming the Evaluative Lens)Vision/Mission/Instructional Priorities and Strategic Action Planning
● Observations and Effective Feedback that Moves Teacher Practice (Danielson)

● Creating SEL Schools of Excellence
